Breakthrough, humble beginnings

Today we got a great start on our breakthrough projects - creating our breakthrough doc, clear goals for the term and deciding how we were going to M.A.D (Make A Difference).

We were also lucky enough to have a visitor from The Mind Lab to demonstrate how to effectively use robots and programming, it had our learners so engaged!

Bike safety with Bigfoot

Today our year 6's were lucky enough to have Bigfoot come in and teach them how to enjoy bikes in a safe manner.

First we had some theory in the hub, exploring how to check our bikes for quality and make sure we understand how to conduct ourselves when riding. Helmets, flat tires, and caring for other road users were all covered in this extremely informing learning experience.

Next the learners got outside into the sun, checking their bikes again for safety using the 'Four-point check'. Then we were off! The great staff from Bigfoot did some drills and showed children how to give sensible following space and other handy tips.

What a day!

Organising camp menus in our groups

Today we made Stonefields proud and did some great collaboration learning. In groups of 4, we were given a $40 budget and had to organise food for 3 days of camping - not an easy task when there is no fridge or cooking facilities there!

There were creative ideas flying around the hub, from grilled cheese in a pan to spaghetti bolognese, and learners found out a lot about each others preferences for food.

Through compromise and determination, our learners were able to  come up with some great menus, which we look forward to making reality at camp from the 5th of March.

Hub Reading

This week in the hub we have been reading a really cool book, called 'Top 50 Deadliest creatures'. The learners have been really engaged (and sometimes horrified) while finding out about these fascinating animals.

Today we learnt about the Great White Shark, the Brown Recluse Spider and more.

Did you know that people are much more deadly than sharks, with humans killing 120 million sharks every year.

Welcome to Hub 9

This year we have 5 teachers in the hub - meaning collaboration is at an all time high and children have more teacher time than ever!

The teachers in the hub in 2014 are:

Ollie Baker
Troy Lunn
Jenny Pearson
Treena Brand
Georgie Hamilton

We have 66 learners and a huge learning space, filled with the latest technology such as Apple Macs', Samsung Smart TV's, and a 1:1 ratio of laptops to children.

Its going to be a great year, we hope the children are as excited as we are.
